Suzanne Grattan Duffel Bag Murder
Students and teachers at Deming High School are mourning the death of an English teacher whose body was found in a remote area of southern New Mexico. Her husband, George Grattan has been charged with her murder.
Suzanne Grattan,29 and mother of a 3-year-old son, was a 1997 graduate of Deming High School, where she played softball and basketball. She graduated from New Mexico State University in 2003 with a double major in English and journalism. She had worked at the Deming Headlight as a reporter.
Suzanne was reported missing March 18, 2008, when she didn't show up to work at Deming High School, where she taught English.
Her body was inside a duffel bag, in an old well, that was secured with duct tape. Two rolls of duct tape consistent with that found on the duffel bag, was found in the Grattans' home.
Her husband, 28-year-old George Grattan, who was taken into custody on unrelated
charges of passing two bad checks in June, was considered a person of interest in the case until he was formally charged late Friday, March 21, with murder, kidnapping and tampering with evidence. He's held on $110,000 bail.
On Friday, April 4, 2008 a preliminary hearing was held. After hearing the testimony of 10 witnesses Magistrate Court Judge Ray Baese decided that Grattan will go to the Sixth Judicial District court.
