Krystal Skinner Murder

03/31/08

Krystal Skinner, 22, of Lindenwold, N.J. was beaten and stabbed to death on Thursday, March 27, 2008, while her, two-year-old son, John, was in the other room.

Krystal was a senior at Rutgers-Camden college, and a social worker major interning with DYFS, where she would have worked once she graduated in May.

Neighbors and family members say Skinner had a stormy relationship with the baby's father, a 37-year-old man who served time for stalking, simple assault and contempt.

Neighbors in the Laurel Hill apartment complex said they were upset, but not completely shocked. They said it was common knowledge Skinner and her ex-boyfriend had problems.

"I used to hear a lot of fighting," said neighbor Matt Drake. "A lot of the kid screaming."

While police continue their search for the killer, we've learned that DYFS is placing the little boy with Skinner's family, something family members wanted very badly.

Police have no suspects, but authorities want to question her ex-boyfriend and father of her child. His whereabouts are unknown.

Anyone with information on the killing is urged to contact Camden County Prosecutor's Office at 856-225-8400 or call the Lindenwold Police at 856-784-7566.

Boyfriend Charged

Troy Whye, allegedly the boyfriend of 22-year-old Rutgers University student Krystal Skinner, was arrested Monday night and charged with her murder and endangering the welfare of a child, authorities said.

"They found him in the Walter Rand Transportation Center. He was on a high-speed line train. Where he was going, we don't know," said Acting Assistant Prosecutor Mary Alison Albright.

Albright said that, when approached by officers last night, Whye gave them a phony name and a false Social Security number. But the officers were not fooled and took him into custody.

Skinner was found dead March 26 in the Lindenwold apartment she shared with her 3-year-old son and Whye, authorities said. She was stabbed to death. Her son was in the apartment, but was unharmed.

Whye was arraigned at 11 a.m. at the Camden County Courthouse. He was arrested at about 10 p.m. Monday, authorities said.

Whye did not have an attorney in court, so a judge will appoint a public defender.

Bail was set at $1 million. Camden County Superior Court Judge Irvin Snyder said Whye was a flight risk, and that his high bail was justified.

Whye has a lengthy criminal record and multiple aliases. He has served prison time for an aggravated assault and has been the subject of several domestic violence complaints.
