Cold Case Gripe!!!

I was just updating the 36-year-old William Miller cold case murder. The culprits have been charged with conspiracy and pre-meditated 1st degree murder.

George Hayden was a Marine, in 1972, who had an affair with another marine's wife, Vickey Miller.

This is how I see it......Vickey Miller was married to William "Billy" Miller and had a baby girl together. Vickey must have fallen helplessly, and passionately in love with George and couldn't live without him...... so much so that a conspiracy was conspired.

Vickey, allegedly, lured her husband, Billy, to a secluded area and, upright soldier that he was, George (allegedly--humph!) shot Billy to death. (I think I read they were married 3 month's later).

George Hayden was a Police Chief with the Cape Carteret and Belhaven police Depts. The State asked for 1 million dollars bail, which appears to be the going rate for murders of this type. Because George has been such an upright citizen all of these years the judge said... hmmm let's just let him put his son and his house up for collateral. (Value $350,000 and falling due to the financial crisis, I'm sure).

How the heck does the judge know that he's been a good boy all these years??? He's been a murderer (allegedly <-----<<< there's that damn word again!) for 36 years... that's not too upright.

If he got away with murder for 36 years, I can't help but wonder what else he's gotten away with. This is a man who has had a lot of power at his disposal. Has he been soft on crime? Has he, maybe, turned a blind eye to other murder or domestic violence cases? What the......?

I'm a little worried about the guy who came forward as a witness, too. He said he's been in fear for his life for 36 years, and still is. I sure hope he doesn't have an unfortunate "accident" now that the judge, so liberally, let this murderer (allegedly-Grrrrr) out so cheap!!! (Did this judge ever work with Hayden???)

Murder is murder and premeditated murder is the worst no matter when it's done. Hayden would have gotten life in prison, if he were convicted back in the 70's, and would have had to deal with the Marine Corps, too. He probably wouldn't have seen the light of day. Now they're saying Hayden might get out in 10 years if he is convicted.

It seems to me that when a real old "cold case" is solved the judicial system seems to go soft on the culprits. This is especially true if the (alleged) murderer is an ex-cop. (Or a, bag-o-weapons carrying, diaper wearing astronaut.<------<<< not up on murder charges).

There's a moral to this story. If you are married and hopelessly and passionately in love with another man (or woman) and feel you can't live without him/her. DO NOT -- I repeat -- DO NOT... conspire and kill him (or her). Vickey Miller married George Hayden.... since then her name has changed. She is now Vickey Miller Hayden Cooper Babbitt. She may have not wanted Billy anymore, but she didn't want George, eventually, either (or a couple of others). Trust me... it's a passing fancy... just get a divorce! Besides that... it makes it real messy for the kids later on!!!

Oh.... what the hell... nobody ever pays attention to what I say anyway. (Just ask my kids-lol!)

What do you think??? Click on Add REPLY and tell me!

That is just a totally and allegedly untrue statement!! LOL

I just love it when you get on a good rant, especially like the one above. This guy has been living free and easy for 36 years, getting away with murder, and putting another human being through pure hell and torture because he/she was a witness. I can't believe that judge! If this witness comes up with a bounty on his/her head, we will be on it like stink on ......!

The good old boy network strikes again! But what they don't realize is they have a new force to contend with! Right?.....(you got my back?? LOL)

I couldn't agree with you more, Cloey (not that I was paying attention or anything...)  There's another, similar cold case I'm aware of.  Same sort of thing.  The "good ol' boy" who was FINALLY charged with murder after 26 years may walk because ....well...he's a good ol' boy - except for that one little "mistake" all those years ago....  Uh, alleged "mistake".  Murder is murder and time does not make it OK.  Thanks for the forum to rant along with you.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Perhaps the courts should have considered the anguish, pain, and frustration the Miller family felt over the last 36 years, being so sure that Hayden and Babbitt had "done the deed" and not being able to see an arrest made. Even if George Hayden has been a model citizen since September 17, 1972 (the day after the murder), that doesn't bring Billy back to life ... doesn't give Billy's children the comfort of a loving father over the years ... dosen't fill that empty chair at the Miller Family reunion ... didn't dry the tears of Billy's mother before she passed away ... and so forth.

It's too bad that can't/won't be considered when a sentence is imposed (following conviction, of course ... "innocent until proven guilty" and all that).

As for Vickey Babbitt ... we will have to wait to see if she has the same opportunity to bail out of jail. I believe I read that her next court date is Monday, October 6th.

BTW ... I met my husband less than a month after his brother - Billy -was murdered. I read the report from JAG back then, and I was immediately convinced (along with the rest of the family) that the identity of the murderers was obvious. I am proud to live in a country where it takes proof to arrest and convict someone of murder. I am thankful to God, all of those dedicated officers of the law, journalists with heart and passion for justice, and especially the witness or witnesses that finally felt secure enough to come forward. It must have been horrible for them to live in such fear for the last 36 years. We don't always get the chance to see justice in this life (as in the case of Billy's mother), but maybe ... just maybe ... the Millers have a shot at it.

dmiller, thank you for giving a perspective to this case from the view of the family.  I think so many times we forget that there are hurting family members who have lived this horror in real life.  I hope the Miller family will finally see justice.

I think that maybe the judge should have waited to lower the bail amount.

If Hayden was this kind of guy back in the '70's, I too wonder what he's been up to over the years.

Maybe they should have investigated him more.

Is it possible that the investigators will look into his past affiliations with the police departments to see if there was any hanky-panky going while he was there?

You don't do a premeditated murder like this and then just turn around and be a good guy. Maybe if it was accidental, but not premeditated.

Good luck to the family

The anguish the family has gone through is suppose to come into play while sentencing.

I guess it may come down to the judge. I hope that judge, should he be convicted, hasn't had favorable dealings with a possible corrupt Chief of police.

Do you suppose, as I do, that Hayden hid in the police dept. so he could keep an eye on information that might be against him ??

The best place to hide is often in the open. People are too busy looking elsewhere.

Also, people from his department may be afraid to come forward with any wrong doings they may have disagreed with during his employment there, because of his position above them....

I agree with Webber.... a person who (allegedly--hisssss) commits premeditated murder doesn't change his stripes when it comes to control.

You know, I was just sitting at the computer and looking for I am not sure what. I put in Justice for Sgt. William Miller, and was so proud to see all of the different sites that are keeping his name alive.

Billy now has a voice, he is heard load and clear, he will not be let down again. I was bummed out about George getting bail, but you know what, his life is ruined, he is now a suspect in a murder case, his family is looking at him with questions on their faces. His business associates are turning their backs, he has a future as a inmate in the prison system. All this, while Billy is the hero, his name is on the lips of half the country, we have a major studio wanting to tell his story, he will not be silenced, the roar is getting louder, it will puncture the ear drums of George and Vickie. In the end, George and Vickey will be the end of a bad nightmare .

Billy and mom will then rest in peace! I am proud to call him my brother, one of the Six Little Millers!

I received this letter from someone close to Billy's family and got permission to share it with you!

Dear Niki,

Thank you for having the strength of character to say-it-like-it-is in your Cloey’s Gripe comments and not cave in to the ‘politically correct’ pressure. Seems hardly anyone has felt it is okay to express the genuine emotional disgust and outrage this case provokes in any normal person. Thank you for speaking out on behalf of my father, his family, and everyone else (i.e. the witness) hurt by the selfish despicable actions of his murderers.

I do feel sorry for all the innocent people yet to be hurt by them – all their combined ex-spouses, children, and extended families and can sympathize with the pain and shock they must be feeling now, but it shouldn’t mean that my father doesn’t get justice because some people may think it’s better to let sleeping dogs lie.

With sincere thanks and gratitude.

The responses from the family of William Miller just go to show how one person's actions have such a ripple effect on, not just a family, but a whole community of families. His killers families now have to face that effect also. Why can't people think before they do such horrible acts and think they will get away with it? It is only a matter of time before it all comes back to bite you!
